Foreign visitor spending in Korea is spreading beyond traditional duty-free shopping.

In July, the number of foreign customers using Korean duty-free stores increased from the previous month, while total duty-free sales fell.

At the same time, company data shows foreign spending expanding at mainstream Korean beauty, fashion and delivery platforms.

By the numbers

1.30 million - Foreign duty-free customers in July, up 1.9% from June

5.5% - Month-on-month decline in total Korean duty-free sales in July

33% - Foreign customers' share of Olive Young's offline sales from January through August, up from 26.6% a year earlier

68% / 53% / 61% - Foreign share of sales at Musinsa Standard's Myeongdong, Hongdae and Seongsu stores, respectively, from January through August

331% - Year-on-year increase in Baemin orders measured through payment methods used by foreign customers in the first half of 2026

308% - Increase in transaction value for those Baemin orders

The tourist economy is becoming more local

Duty-free shopping remains part of Korea's inbound tourism economy.

But foreign visitors are increasingly spending inside the same consumer ecosystem used by Korean residents.

Olive Young has become a mainstream tourist stop. Foreign spending accounts for a majority of sales at several Musinsa Standard locations. Delivery apps are also becoming easier for visitors to use as multilingual service and overseas payment options expand.

What the data does - and does not - show

The figures do not prove that every won lost by duty-free stores moved directly to Olive Young, Musinsa or Baemin.

They do show that foreign spending is becoming more distributed across Korean retail and everyday services.

For businesses, the inbound opportunity is moving beyond airports and duty-free channels into ordinary shopping districts and digital platforms.

For visitors, "tourist shopping" in Korea is increasingly overlapping with the places and services locals already use.
