Foreign visitors are increasingly interested in the same convenience-store lunchboxes Koreans eat.
GS Retail says it does not make a separate dosirak line specifically for foreign customers. Instead, the company is seeing interest in Korean-style meals built around dishes such as bulgogi, dakgangjeong and japchae.
The appeal is the everyday Korean convenience-store meal itself.
By the numbers
18,000 - Approximate number of GS25 stores in Korea supplied by GS Retail's nine dosirak manufacturing plants
20 - Approximate number of different dosirak varieties featured each month
?6,900 - Price of GS25's most popular dosirak at the time of the interview
12 weeks - Typical development cycle for a new dosirak, from planning and testing to launch
Convenience stores are becoming food tourism
Korean convenience stores have already become destinations for snacks, drinks and viral products.
Dosirak adds another layer.
For less than the cost of many restaurant meals, a visitor can try several Korean dishes and side dishes in one box.
GS Retail says similar interest is visible at GS25 stores in Vietnam and Mongolia, where customers are also looking for authentic Korean-style convenience-store meals.
What would make this useful for travelers?
A practical SEEN IN KOREA guide should answer:
- what is inside each box
- what it costs
- whether it needs heating
- how filling it is
- which products are easy to find
- what drink or side dish goes well with it
That turns a food trend into something a traveler can use the same day.
