South Korea's tourism boom did not prevent the country's tourism balance from returning to a deficit in July.
The monthly tourism balance posted a $50.3 million deficit after four consecutive months of surplus.
The reason is straightforward: South Koreans spent slightly more on overseas tourism than foreign visitors spent inside Korea.

Inbound visitor numbers are only one side of the equation.
The tourism balance compares tourism spending by foreign visitors in Korea with spending by Korean travelers overseas.
So Korea can receive large numbers of foreign visitors and still record a deficit if outbound spending is higher.
That is what happened in July.
What to watch next
The July gap was relatively small compared with the previous month's surplus.
The more useful long-term questions are how much foreign visitors spend per trip, how long they stay and whether inbound spending can keep pace with Korean outbound tourism spending.
